Maximizing sensor efficiency: strategies for meeting the increasing demands in data centers

As the amount of data being generated continues to grow, the need for more efficient sensors in data centers becomes increasingly demanded. The following are several strategies for maximising sensor efficiency in these environments:

Intelligent monitoring: Utilizing smart sensors that can analyse and interpret data in real-time can help reduce the amount of data that needs to be processed. This allows for a more efficient use of resources, and it could reduce the risk of data loss.

Scalable deployment: Sensors should be deployed in a scalable manner so that they can be easily added or removed as needed. This can help to ensure that the sensor network is optimized for the current needs of the data center and can also help to reduce costs by avoiding over-provisioning.

The placement of sensors requires an understanding of the intended purpose of the sensors and how the collected data will be utilized. Both industry standards and best practises should be considered. For instance, to grasp the efficiency of a mechanical system, it's necessary to deploy a large number and variety of temperature and humidity sensors. In contrast, leak-detection sensors should be positioned with a specific goal in mind.

Pressure sensors, which measure the pressure differential above and below the raised floor, are most effective when positioned in targeted areas with one sensor located above and one below the same floor location.

Contact closure sensors alert when there is no longer contact between adjacent surfaces and are commonly used on rack door entrances. In addition, it can be used to monitor critical electrical and control panels.

Airflow sensors measure the flow of air in metres per second and are best placed at perforated panels, with a minimum of one per aisle, and at the supply and return of CRAC and CRAH units.

Leak detection sensors provide an alert when continuity is lost along a rope or sensor due to contact with liquid and are usually positioned around CRACs and along the refrigerant piping route.

Temperature and humidity sensors, which measure the temperature and relative humidity, should be placed at three locations in front and at the back of the rack as per ASHRAE guidelines.

By implementing these strategies, organisations can maximise the efficiency of their sensors in data centers, ensuring that they are able to meet the increasing demands for data processing and storage. This can help to reduce costs, improve performance, and ensure that data is processed, stored, and managed in the most efficient manner possible.
